One of the first concerns of a Rheumatiod arthritis sufferer, after being diagnosed, is the fact that he or she might have to take drugs for the rest of their lives, and what side effects will there be with the given drugs.
There are many drugs used today, some are relatively new (anti TNF) and therefore we cannot possibly know as much about the side effects. However, these drugs do seem to offer a much greater relief from the arthritis pain and suffering. Arthritis patients are sometimes afraid of biologics, also known as biologic response modifiers, as these anti-TNF drugs are called. The known side effects can be very serious (Infections, lymphomas and more.), so fear is not an illogical response. What is the benefit vs. risk for TNF blockers? If the condition is out of control, the risk may be worth taking. It would be for you and your doctor to decide whether the risk was worth taking.
Among the other drugs available are the DMARD (disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs). Of which Methotrexate and Sulphasalazine are two of the most popular, and have been used for decades.
Here are some of the things that you should know about Methotrexate.
1. It will take about 3 months before the effects of the drug really give benefit to the average sufferer.
2. Methotrexate was used to treat cancer patients prior to it's use for arthritis patients (although the cancer dosages would have been much higher).
3. Methotrexate works by blocking the enzyme dihydrofloate reductase, which in turn affects the production of folic acid. This is why folic acid is prescribed as an addition.
4. It is important to have liver function tests on a regular basis (suggested at least every 3 months), as this drug can cause an abnormal liver function. The risk is much higher for those that also drink alcohol.
5. Other side effects could include nausea and vomiting, a persistent cough, a shortness of breath, a rash, mouth sores and a gradual hair loss.
6. Methotrexate should not be taken if you plan to become pregnant, or are pregnant. It has been known to cause serious birth defects. Please consult your doctor. And also, consultation with your doctor should take place prior to any prescription, and you should divulge all the drugs already being taken, and mention any herbal remedies being used. (some of the herbal remedies make Methotrexate more toxic)
