Diabetes Rates on the Rise
A distressing new report from GP practices shows that the number of patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the UK increased by 145,000 last year. This is a stunning statistic that can be directly linked to the obesity epidemic. At present there are over 5.2 million obese people in the UK, which is nearly one in ten.
What is the link? Well, about ninety percent of people with diabetes have Type 2 diabetes. Or more specifically, they acquired Type 2 diabetes. We use the word acquired because the disease is almost always attributed to lifestyle choices. For example, of the 5 million obese people in the UK 2.6 million have Type 2 diabetes. That's more than half.
What is it? Both forms of diabetes are extremely serious conditions that increase the risk of stroke, heart disease, kidney failure and even blindness. Diabetes is responsible for more deaths in the UK than breast cancer. And caring for someone with diabetes is far more expensive than teeth whitening.
In fact, the NHS has called the situation extremely worrying. Now, we hate to bring up money, but with the poor economy it is a major concern for the future of the NHS. After all, if these numbers continue to rise at the current rate it will cause significant financial problems.
Just imagine taking care of an additional 145,000 diabetes patients each year! As we mentioned, it is an expensive condition that requires constant medical care.
